What Is a Punch List?

A punch list is a simple list of small repairs, adjustments, and finishing touches that need to be completed in a home. These are usually items that are not urgent or dangerous, but are noticeable, annoying, or long overdue.

Most punch list items fall into one category:
Things you see every day and think, “I really need to fix that,” but never quite get around to.
Where the Term “Punch List” Comes FromThe term “punch list” comes from construction and real estate. At the end of a project, a builder or contractor creates a list of minor items that still need attention before the job is considered complete.

In homes, punch lists often appear:
  • After moving in
  • Before selling a property
  • After an inspection
  • Or simply after years of small things piling up

Over time, these lists grow—even though each individual item feels too small to call a contractor for.

    Common Punch List Items

Punch list items are typically small, contained fixes, such as:

    • Sticky, rubbing, or misaligned doors
    • Loose handles, hinges, or cabinet hardware
    • Nail pops or small drywall repairs
    • Cracked or failing caulk
    • Paint touch-ups and minor cosmetic fixes
    • Shelves, curtain rods, mirrors, or blinds that need mounting
    • Light fixtures or ceiling fans being swapped out
    • Squeaks, wobbles, or everyday annoyances

These are not remodels. They’re not big projects.
They’re the final details that make a home feel finished.

      Why Punch Lists Get Ignored

Punch lists don’t get ignored because they’re unimportant.
      They get ignored because:

      • Each item feels “too small” to schedule
      • Homeowners don’t want estimates for minor fixes
      • Traditional handymen often price by the hour or per item
      • Projects turn into multiple visits with loose ends

As a result, the list just keeps growing.

        Why Punch Lists Matter

While each item may be small, together they have a real impact.
        A neglected punch list can:

        • Make a home feel unfinished
        • Create daily frustration
        • Hurt resale or inspection outcomes
        • Turn into bigger problems over time

Clearing the list brings immediate relief and a sense of closure.

          Punch Lists vs. Projects

It’s important to understand the difference.

          Punch list work is:
          • Small, contained repairs
          • Finishing and adjustment work
          • Tasks that can be completed in one focused visit
          Punch list work is NOT:
          • Remodeling
          • Structural repairs
          • Permit-based work
          • Multi-day projects

If it needs multiple trades, multiple days, or major planning, it’s not a punch list item.

            • Check items off until the visit is complete

The Goal of a Punch List

              The goal isn’t perfection.
              The goal is closure.

A punch list is done when:
              • The small things are handled
              • The annoyances are gone
              • The home feels complete again

That’s what a Knockout™ visit is designed to deliver.
